Montparnasse, Randwick

Discovering A French Treasure In Randwick

I visited Montparnasse for a farewell dinner early September this year. So it's pretty obvious that this post has been long delayed. This hidden gem in Randwick was highly recommended by a friend of mine. He described the place as having a mixture of modern and classic French design, a place where Marilyn Monroe will be happy to dine in. So based on such wonderful descriptions, I immediately made a booking for 'a table for six' that week.

'Wonderful' seems like an underrated survey of this place, it's beyond wonderful for me personally. I love the place, I love the service, the food and among other things, I love the price too. I was the first one to arrive at this intimate restaurant, while my husband and friends were looking for a place to park. Sitting on an empty table with only silence accompanying me, a very thoughtful and friendly staff actually offered me a glass of complimentary champagne to start with.

Once everyone arrived, we quickly flipped through the extensive French menu. We finally settled with 3 entrees to be shared among us and a main dish for each person. We were served with complementary breads as well, but I do have to apologise because I actually forgot what exactly was it, but as far as my memory serves, it was a delicious savoury bread with toppings.

Entree 1: Brochettes Saint Jacques et Crevettes  $18.00
Despite the impossible name of the dishes, we managed to make up our mind quickly with the help of a knowledgeable staff. The first entree we had was a cripsy shrimp served with avocado , orange and balsamic vinegar. This got to be the best entrees of the night, the sauce was a killer, it was sweet and tasty. What a luscious sauce to bring out the best in the shrimp.

Entree 2: Moules Gratinees a l'anis (6 pieces) $10.50
The second entree was a plate of six mussels stuffed with a farce made of pastis (an anise flavoured liqueur), garlic, parsley, cream. The mussels were crumbed and oven baked. I found the mussel oddly bitter, I guess it must have come from the liqueur. The taste of the garlic was very strong, which for me felt a little bit too 'biting' on the tounge.

Entree 3: Feuillete de Saumon  $14.50
I like this entree, simply because it's served with a pastry puff. Sandwich between the French puff are salmon, melted leeks, lemon and dill sauce. It was a pleasant 'crispy on the outside and meltingly soft in the inside' moment for me.

Main 1: Cote de Boeuf  $29.00
My husband and another friend had the Rib Eye Steak. With any selection from the grill, we are allowed to choose a sauce and two side dishes to complement the steak. My husband chose the green peppercorn sauce, french fries and their Gratin Douphinois (which is a thinly sliced oven baked potatoes with cream and garlic) to go with his steak. The steak came in huge serving and beautifully cooked, however in comparison to the premium beef fillet which my other friend ordered, we found  this one was not as tender.

Main2: Fillet de Boeuf  $30.00
The premium beef fillet was smaller in size compared to the rib eye, but without doubt it was a better quality meat...it's juicy and tender in every bite.

Main 3: Magret de Canard au Calva et Pommes Caramelisees   $29.00
I love duck! especially French duck...I constantly crave for one, so whenever I see a 'duck dish' on a menu, I will most likely order it, so it's no difference this time.
This main of mine was a duck fillet, which is normally served medium to rare in France. I have no problem of having rare meat as long as it's a recommended way of serving. Of course, for those who prefer their meat cooked, I'm sure the kitchen will be more than happy to serve as you wish.  Because it was mostly rare, the meat tasted slightly chewy. However, you can taste the distinguish flavour of the meat very well. The dish was served with an appetising red wine sauce, vegetable mousse and some delicious caramalised apples.

Finally, Like I always say...A meal is never complete without desserts.
We ordered a French Classic Creme Brulee, a Fondant au Chocolat Glace and a Tarte Tartin to share.

The creme Brulee ($14.50) was pretty good, it has the right texture and it's reasonably sweet.

The Fondant au Chocolat Glace ($14.50) came up to be a chocolate mousse type cake. It's your typical rich and creamy chocolate mousse cake.

Finally, the Tarte Tartin ($15.00). It was different to the normal French apple tart that I know. Over here, they placed the whole poached apple on top of a small piece of pastry, served with ice cream and a thin butter biscuit on the side. Despite the different approach, it was an enjoyable light dessert to close the meal.

Overall, I think Montparnasse is a great neighbourhood restaurant where you can find tasty French dishes without being pretentious. The service is a delight too. Overall, I was really satisfied with my experience there, although it would have been better if their dessert's serving is as generous as their mains.

Bon Appetit!

Ten Japanese Restaurant, Randwick

Before eating, Japanese people say "itadakimasu," a polite phrase meaning "I receive this food." This expresses thanks to whoever worked to prepare the food in the meal.

Ten Japanese Restaurant is located in Randwick. I've been asking a few friends (who live in Randwick) about this restaurant, but so far the feedback that I got were not very impressive, mainly because it is slightly pricey. However, my husband and I decided to give it a try because we were craving for some Japanese food and their menu looks pretty extensive, with wide varieties of dishes to choose from.

Being a big fan of Bento Box, we had around 13 different bento boxes to choose from. We decided on Teriyaki Chicken and Unagi (Eel). We found the service was a little bit slow, but still acceptable for me. However, the food did compensate for the slow service. It was delicious, sashimi was really fresh and portion was generous too, so in the end we didn't have anything to complain.

Bento Box 1: Chicken Teriyaki.  $25.50

Bento Box 2: Unagi (Eel) Bento Box $30.50

Each bento box comes with Salad, Prawn and Vegetable Tempura, Fresh Sashimi, Takoyaki, Gyoza and Salmon & Avocado Sushi.

Overall, Ten Japanese Restaurant has a pretty nice decor and ambiance to dine in, but they don't put too much effort on service, what they do offer is delicious Japanese cuisine with slightly higher price but big serving.

After eating, Japanese people once again express their thanks for the meal by saying "gochiso sama deshita," which literally means "it was quite a feast."

Restaurant Balzac, Randwick

If we're not willing to settle for junk living, we certainly shouldn't settle for junk food.(Sally Edwards)

Restaurant Balzac has been on my wish list for a long long time. Each time I drive past the place, I would always think, 'Gotta try it, gotta try it!'. Finally, my wish came true yesterday, when my husband suggested maybe we should try Restaurant Balzac, it's so close to where we live and his colleague has highly recommended this to him too.

So I went to their website and to my suprise, they actually offer a $55 Pre-Ritz dinner, which is a 2 course dinner plus tea/coffee (between 6-8pm). What a great value for a one chef hat restaurant! So I picked up the phone and reserved a table for two.

The dining room is very cosy with an elegant sandstone wall. The staff is friendly and attentive. Service is five-star and everything seems perfect so far. Now let's see if the food will impress my taste bud too.

The staff served us with a complimentary corn valoute that kindle our appetite. It's very creamy and full of corn flavour in it. We are impressed!

Entree: Cannelloni of Tuna Tartare with Panfried Mackerel, Poached beetroot and Horsedish sorbet ($24). The Tuna tartare is superb, it's rolled with something like a jelly sheet and the horsedish sorbet is sweet and matches very well with the caviar. We are impressed!

Entree: The Warm Citrus Cured Ocean Trout with Baby Fennel , Pink Grapefruit and Radish ($25). The ocean trout is really fresh but overall it failed to impress me, as there's nothing really distinctive about this dish. We were not dissapointed but I would recommend you to perhaps try other entree.

Main: Pasture Fed Black Angus Sirloin with Bone Marrow and Wild Pine Mushroom ($42).
We ordered medium rare but I think it was cooked closer to medium. The sirloin was complemented well with the sauce and I absolutely adore the bone marrow, it's so rich, unctuous and full of flavour. It's just indescribable how it enhances the flavour of the sirloin. But be warned that you will actually feel like you are swallowing fats and the beef smell is really strong.
The mushrooms come as a side with some dutch carrots and to my surprise again brussels sprout.
(It was not long ago, in my previous post I actually asked myself, if there's any restaurant do serve brussels sprout since so many people hate it)

Main: Suckling Pig with Black Pudding, Celeriac Puree, Savoy Cabbage and Peridog Truffle ($38). I actually like this better than the beef,  it's really tasty and the black pudding is delicious, it's meaty, with a little sweet and spicy taste. This impressed me!

Complementary Dessert: Pineapple with crust ice and Panna cotta. After such a tasty meal, this dessert come just at the right time, the pineapple is sligthly sour, it's icy and panna cotta is perfectly creamy.

Finally, the star of the evening is the Bread and Butter Pudding with Pain d'Epice Ice Cream. $16
This beats any of the above! It's so good!
Even the waitress told us we picked the right choice, their Bread and Butter Pudding is never disappointing.

The bread is warm, with a crispy burnt layer on top, so buttery with some raisins in the middle.
Not only the ice cream melts in your mouth but the bread too!
What a satisfying dinner. So if you wish to indulge yourself with a french cuisine at a fraction of price, I can't see why Balzac is not on your list.

Isabella's, Randwick

I've been on a diet for two weeks and all I've lost is two weeks. (Totie Fields)

Isabella's is situated on the busy Alison road in Randwick. This is my third time to this restaurant. I have truly enjoyed my meal every time I went there (that's why I go back for more dates with Isabella's). The ambiance of the restaurant is really great, warm lighting, with lots of photos hanging around and there are big gold frame mirrors hanging along the wall which give an elegance touch to the restaurant.

If you are looking for value, this is definitely a place where you can get best value for your money and food, the serving is generous considering is relatively inexpensive. The service was really good, the staffs are friendly and attentive.

Me and my husband ordered an entree (The Scallop Salad) to share. If I'm not mistaken there were 4 or 5 big size scallops inside, the flavour of the marination is really tasteful.

Scallop Salad
(Pan-seared scallops with rockets, goat's cheese, avocado, pine nuts, cherry tomato & Balsamic dressing)  $ 14.00

My husband ordered the Rib Eye Steak, which is pretty decent too, not the best steak but good enough for a small restaurant like this, the meat is juicy and the red wine sauce served well with the steak. The steak comes with mash potato too, which according to my husband, is the best mash potato he had so far, he likes it because is not too buttery and it's creamy enough.

Rib Eye Steak 600gm (Grilled Rib Eye Steak, potatoes, grilled mushroom, sauted green vegetables, red wine sauce)  $ 29.00

Now...the star of the date is my "Linguini with Chorizo & Prawn".
When I had my first mouth, my taste bud was clearly cheering inside. Even my husband couldn't keep his fork away from my linguini. The combination of the cream, tomato sauce and the herbs are just perfect for me, the prawn is crunchy, the chorizo is not too salty and everything just goes very well together.

Linguini with Chorizo & Prawn (with smoked paprika, garlic and mushroom in a light cream and tomato sauce on linguini)  $ 24.50

Overall, this is the best dish I've had in Isabella's so far.
I almost lick my plate by the end of it. And did i mention the serving is huge!
